The Sole E55 Elliptical Trainer – there’s No
Better Machine for the Money
The Sole E55 elliptical trainer tends to be over-shadowed by
the other three models in the company’s “E-Series” class. It’s the classic case
of the middle child complaining of being ignored.
Yet Sole’s E55 model offers more programs and a larger flywheel than its less
expensive siblings, and it steps up to a higher level in its display and the
Heart Rate Control. (The E25 and E35 offer only pulse monitoring.) For the price
and features, the Sole E55 elliptical trainer holds its own in the family.
Just Like The Health Club!
Most Sole elliptical reviews are enthusiastic about the heavy flywheel (27 lbs)
used in this model that, which combined with the unit’s 190-lb frame and 82"
footprint, makes for a smooth ride. The Sole E55 elliptical
gives you the type of feel that you usually only find on $4000 commercial cross
trainers at the health club which are usually packing a 30-lb flywheel.
More Features
The Sole E55 elliptical comes with some key features such as a blue backlit LCD
display, separate user IDs for different training programs, a track display, and
pulse monitoring for the heart rate interactive programs. In addition, the heart
rate monitor will automatically adjust the amount of resistance in the workout
to give you optimum results. Also standard on the Sole E55 is the roomy 20"
stride length and dual direction (forward, backward motion) for a complete
elliptical trainer workout.

As with the other models in the “E-Series” you can use the
stationary bars and work on the lower body, or grab the handlebars and pump your
arms adding in the upper body workout.
We’d be remiss in our review of the Sole E55 if we didn’t stress the importance
of the presence of the articulating footpads. This separates the well-designed
machine from the rest of the herd. These cushioned foot pedals are sloped inward
2 degrees to mimic the way you walk. A lack of circulation caused by static
pedals makes your feet go numb, but this flex in the elliptical trainer’s pedals
overcomes that problem for most users.
Pay Attention to the Warranty
An indication of a quality elliptical trainer is reflected in the length of the
warranty. You’ll want to get a machine with a motor and parts warranty of five
years minimum, as well as a couple of years on the labor. Short warranties such
as those found on budget machines are a warning sign that the company isn’t
fully standing behind their product, or else they’d go broke trying to replace
parts on all those machines.
Worth The Money
If you’re not cut out for the gym life, or just have that do-it-yourself
attitude toward designing a workout program, you need a first-rate elliptical to
entice you to pursue your daily fitness regime. The Sole E55 elliptical trainer
offers the quality and advanced features that you’ll find in health club models
and does so at an extremely affordable price. You can’t buy a better machine for
the money.
