The ProForm XP 420 Razor Elliptical Reduces Discomfort

Narrow is the buzz word for the ProForm XP 420 Razor elliptical for obvious reasons. One issue fitness enthusiasts have had in the past with ellipticals is the often uncomfortable stance when straddling and peddling while working out. The Razor significantly reduces that discomfort.

ProForm elliptical reviews about the Razor XP 420 are mainly written by its target market: women. They point out that the narrow rear flywheel offers a very ergonomic stance, and the 16” adjustable stride length is perfect for women under 5’7”. And while the model is limited in advanced features, for a reasonable price of $399, it offers a few surprises.

The rear flywheel ProForm XP 420 Razor Elliptical comes with an adjustable stride, digital resistance, Perfect Motion Technology, 6 workout programs (4 personal trainers and 2 for target toning), a heart rate monitor, and of course, the 3.75 inch narrow stance which is about half the width of any other light duty trainer. It has a Target Pacer function which is great for gauging the level of intensity of your workout.

Drawbacks

One issue all ProForm elliptical reviewers seem to mention is the questionable quality of the components. This includes problem areas such as the plastic flywheel (which is also noisy!) and some parts that don’t assemble easily or line up well during the initial set-up. When you factor in the potential breakable issues, you quickly come to understand why Icon Health and Fitness, the maker of ProForm, offers such a weak 90 days warranty on the parts and labor on these models.

Another issue with the ProForm XP420 Razor is the lack of an AC adapter. It’s not standard -- you have to buy it separately -- and the display won’t last long running on four D batteries.

Our Verdict

ProForm has the market on budget machine in the sub-$1000 range. They sell some decent models in the $500 to $1,000 range, but below that they unfortunately have to sacrifice quality in order to pack on enough “wow” factor features to lure in buyers. That’s not to say the ProForm XP420 Razor Elliptical won’t do the job for you. It will -- if you’re a petite female or your home gym has other equipment for workouts and you can get by with using a light duty crosstrainer such as this one.
