The ProForm 4.0X Elliptical – an Average Budget Trainer
Icon Fitness sells a lot of budget trainers, and the
ProForm 4.0X elliptical is one of the popular beginner models priced at
around $399. It’s a bit of a wobbly machine (as many sub-$500 rear wheel
trainers tend to be) but offers other interesting features worthy of a look.
In most of the ProForm elliptical reviews as well as the one on the ProForm 4.0X
you’ll read here, make a note of the strengths and weaknesses. In order to keep
the price down, the manufacturer has had to sacrifice quality and features in
certain areas, but then will give you “a little something” in another feature to
improve the appeal of the machine. How well you respond to the elliptical will
depend on which trade-offs they included in that particular model.
The Features
Take a look at the features of the ProForm 4.0X: a handlebar dual-grip EKG™
Heart Rate Monitor to keep you in the training zone, 10 levels of resistance at
the touch of a button, 8 Personal Trainer workouts, a Target Pacer indicator
light to let you know when to step up your efforts, and Quick Target Toning
workouts to work on special areas such as the gluts, quads, hammies, and calves.

It also provides upper-body workout arms to tone the arms,
shoulders, and back -- which is a nice bonus. In addition, the ProForm 4.0X
elliptical also has a motivational aspect: the MP3 compatible music port lets
you listen to your own tunes or motivational programs as you exercise.
Our Verdict
The ProForm 4.0X has some decent features but we caution buyers that this type
of elliptical trainer can actually be too easy to use. By that we mean that if
you treat the machine gently and use the lowest settings, or just plug in your
MP3 and give yourself a low-impact 20 minute workout, you’ll never get the
results you seek. Ellipticals are most effective when you can go all out in a
real cardio workout. Anything else will eventually bore you and leave you
wanting to do something else. Like sit and watch TV.
Overall, the ProForm 4.0X elliptical rates as an average machine but one that
could last you a few years doing light workouts a couple of times per week. If
you are interested in reviewing other budget trainers, we suggest you check out
models made by NordicTrack and Horizon.
